How to Protect Your Harley from Theft

Everyone has their own reasons for wanting a Harley.  Your Harley Davidson can solve your commuting problems such as traffic jams and fuel economy, as well as be something fun and exciting compared to your standard car. Unfortunately in today’s world, especially with the economy being the shape it’s in, a motorcycle is sometimes easier for thieves to steal. It’s important to know exactly what to do to protect your Harley!

According to National Insurance Crime Bureau statistics, motor vehicle thefts are on the rise, and among the vehicles being targeted are motorcycles. That’s right! Your Harley is something everyone else wants, and some will just take it if you aren’t careful.  It's one thing to have your property stolen, but if it is something you love and have invested a lot of money into, that is a different story altogether. And only 25% to 30% of motorcycles are recovered after theft.

Follow these simple steps and techniques to protect your Harley from theft.

  • When at home, park your bike in an inconspicuous or otherwise concealed location. Make sure to it out of view to make it less of a temptation for potential thieves. When away from home, park your Harley in a well-populated, well-lit, secure area.
  • Always try to find a parking lot with a security-camera system and/or a security guard.
  • If you cannot hide your bike in your garage, invest in a cover to keep it out of view.
  • Install a hidden kill switch that must be held down when starting your Harley. These switches are inexpensive.  You can also go with an even cheaper method which is to simply remove the main plug each time you leave your Harley Davidson.
  • Put your second locking mechanism high above the ground so that thieves cannot get leverage off the ground to remove it.
  • When you lock your bike to something, make sure you choose something solid, like the foundation of your house or a lamp post. Things like a wooden fence can be broken or dismantled to get around the lock.
  • Use your Harley’s built-in lock. Thieves can often bypass these systems, but there’s no reason to make it easy for them.
  • It’s a great idea to use a second locking system, such as a disc lock or chain system that is attached to your Harley’s frame.
  • There are several new mechanical devices that can help ensure you'll find your bike where you left it. Many dealers are now selling motorcycles with alarms as a standard feature, as well as similar anti-theft devices
  • Never leave your Harley unguarded or with the motor running.
  • Don't leave the keys in the ignition or anywhere within close proximity to the bike.
  • Lastly, it’s important that you have the right insurance. You need an insurance policy that offers the coverage that is important to your specific bike and lifestyle.
