2009 Women and Motorcycling

There is no doubt that women have been riding motorcycles as long as men.  In fact, women riders are just as daring and inconceivable as those of their male peers.  In the past, motorcycles were bought primarily for recreation and primarily by men; however, pioneering women riders did make their marks in the motorcycling world.  Such rider’s include Augusta and Adeline Van Buren, Theresa Wallach and Bessie Stringfield.

The women mentioned above have made significant contributions to motorcycling and have earned places in the AMA's Motorcycle Hall of Fame. There are other women riders today who are also making their marks, such as Ashley Fiolek in motocross and Leslie Porterfield in land-speed record competition.  These women may, one day, earn their own spots in that hallowed Hall.

For all those women who love to ride their Harleys, you will want to make note of the Premier Women's Motorcycling event in the country.  This event is heading west in 2009 to one of the best riding areas in the United States! The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is preparing for the fifth AMA International Women & Motorcycling Conference.  This event is presented by Harley-Davidson and Buell and will take place at the Keystone Resort & Conference Center in Keystone, Colo., on Aug 19-22. For those interested, be sure to register quickly because this is going to be the best one yet!

Keep in mind, the number of women riders in America is growing as we speak. Statistically, in 2003, an estimated 9.6 percent of the motorcycle owners in America were women. In 2008, that percentage was estimated at 12.4 percent.  Basically, there are more women in motorcycling than ever before!
